What Is Plastic Injection Molding?

Plastic injection molding is a widely used manufacturing process for creating plastic products in various dimensions. Plastic raw materials are heated until molten, then injected into molds where, under injection pressure, the material flows to fill every cavity. After maintaining pressure and cooling, the molded part is ejected, completing one injection cycle.

Below is our full injection molding process breakdown:

1. Product Design
   • Define injection part requirements and initial concept.
   • Design in 3D for structural feasibility and manufacturability.
   • Select suitable materials (e.g., heat-resistant, UV-resistant, impact-resistant).
   • Optional: 3D-print prototypes for appearance review.
   • Optional: Fabricate sample molds to test with actual production materials.
     
     
     
     
     
2. Mold Fabrication
   • Produce molds via CNC machining or EDM (electrical discharge machining).
   • Optional: Conduct mold flow analysis to optimize gate placement and prevent defects.
   • Optional: Add mold markings (e.g., logos, date stamps) per client requirement.
     
     
     
     
3. Material Preparation
   • Dry moisture-sensitive plastics (e.g., PA, PC) before molding.
   • Add colorants (masterbatch/powder) or reinforcements (e.g., glass fibers) to enhance performance.
     
     
4. Trial Molding & Adjustment
   • Produce T0 samples for client review and testing.
   • Modify molds as needed and repeat until samples meet client standards.
     
     
5. Injection Molding
   • Heat the plastic material and inject it into molds using high pressure.
   • Sustain pressure to prevent shrinkage, then cool and eject parts.
     
     
     
     
6. Finishing & Quality Inspection
   • Trim flash and gates.
   • Inspect dimensions and appearance using calipers, 3D measuring tools, and colorimeters.
   • Perform functional tests (tensile strength, impact resistance, heat resistance).
     
     
     
7. Secondary Operations (Optional)
   • Surface treatments: painting, printing, plating for enhanced appearance.
   • Ultrasonic welding to join parts.
   • CNC trimming for precision finish.
     
     
     
     
8. Assembly & Packaging
   • Assemble plastic parts with metal or other components.
   • Package in bulk (250–1,000 pcs per bag) or customized packaging per customer specifications.
