What is OEKO-TEX Standard 100?

"OEKO-TEX Standard 100" is one of the world's best-known labels for textiles tested for harmful substances, it was created by Austrian Textile Research Institute (OTI), International Association for Research and Testing in the Field of Textile Ecology (OEKO-TEX®), and other 14 well-known inspection organizations and laboratories among many countries in 1992 (including China, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, United States, and United Kingdom).

 

OEKO-TEX tests every component of textile/leather products chemically such as thread, button, buckle, and other accessories, it takes into account numerous regulated and non-regulated substances, which may be harmful to human health, including suitable PH value to human skin, color fastness, formaldehyde, toluene, nickel, insecticide, the product must not have chlorinated organic matter, carcinogen, dyestuff which may cause allergy, volatile matter, etc. The standard is applied to textile products, leather goods and all related objects during production, furthermore, it also has regulation for production pollution such as air pollution, production wastes, industrial wastewater, or noises.

The criteria for Oeko-Tex® testing for harmful substances are revised every year and are therefore always up to date with regard to legal regulations and the newest scientific findings.

Product Class

In order to get OEKO-TEX certified, every element used in all manufacturing process must be complied with the regulation of OEKO-TEX, the harmful chemicals must not reach the maximum value set, all parts must be tested, from thread, button, zipper, lining, and even other accessories.

There're totally four grades at the moment, please see below:

  • Product Class I: Articles for babies and toddlers

  • Product Class II: Articles with direct contact to the skin

  • Product Class III: Articles without direct contact to the skin

  • Product Class IV: Home textiles

The strictest one is obviously Product Class I, which contact directly to babies. Harmful elements in textile products may stimulate delicate and sensitive ski sof baby, so all the textile or leather products should be regulated according to Product Class I by chemical methods to ensure there's no poisoning substance generated especially after being chewed or bit by baby.

 

Benefits

Consumer nowadays are much more emphasized on health related issues, that's why OEKO-TEX is highly recognized, the products with OEKO-TEX compliance means that they have been tested and certified to be free of toxic. In Taiwan, there has been hundreds of manufacturer who supplies textile and leather goods has passed OEKO-TEX, in order to fulfill Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR), there're also some famous brands has now required their supplier to provide consumers products which are complied with OEKO-TEX, by setting maximum values for harmful substances, at the same time, suppliers can also do continuous improvement on environmental protection, i.e. since 1998, C&A has gradually enhanced their products, at first underwear and baby garments, then jacket, sweater, pants, and leather clothing, now, they have up to 90% of products offered by them are complied with OEKO-TEX, they have really created a good social image and public relations through this way; there're also mail-order retailers: QUELLE, OTTO, Steilmann, and Karstadt & Neckarmann, who have developed standard or eco-specifications and asked their suppliers to apply for certificate of OEKO-TEX.
